Job Purpose

The Chief Mate/Officer on PLSVs is responsible for ensuring the vessel is maintained to a high standard, maintaining the efficiency and safety of operations. They are responsible for deck equipment and machinery and will oversee the deck maintenance program. They are also responsible for maintaining navigational watch for safe navigation, both in port and during dynamic positioning operations. Additionally, if the Master is unable to perform their duties, the Chief Mate will assume command of the vessel, including ship handling.

Job Description

  • Senior DP Watchkeeper with overall responsibility for navigational safety and DP operations during their watch.
  • Maintain the vessel’s navigational safety at all times, including at sea and at anchor.
  • Ensure the continued safety of the vessel while in port.
  • Relieve the Master whenever possible and work to develop and maintain proficient ship handling skills.
  • Assist Second Officers in developing their competencies for future promotion opportunities.
  • Ensure all mandatory procedures related to navigational watch, DP operations, and work control are efficiently used and available for audit purposes.
  • Ensure operational competence with all onboard safety, bridge, and navigational systems.
  • Assist the Master in emergency response situations.
  • Officer in charge of the main emergency response team.
  • Maintain communication with other Deck Officers regarding general vessel routines.
  • Ensure all project and vessel equipment and cargo are loaded to maintain vessel stability according to sea conditions and are properly secured before departure.
  • Ensure certification of all lifting appliances and rigging equipment is maintained.
  • Supervise maintenance and renewal of lifesaving and firefighting equipment, ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Oversee tank cleaning operations onboard, assigning teams accordingly.
  • Perform any other tasks as instructed by the Master.

You are meant for this job if:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Nautical Science.
  • Fluent English.
  • Solid knowledge and experience with PLSV vessels.

 

Required Certifications and Training:

  • CIR – Chief Mate (1st Officer of Navigation).
  • Certificate of Competency (CoC): II/2 – IV/2.
  • Full STCW Certification.
