Job Purpose

To support various departments of the business unit and associated subcontractors in ensuring weld quality, integrity and traceability throughout umbilical manufacturing including proposals, qualification, umbilical lay-up and termination.  Accountable and responsible for welding inspection and coordination of the NDT subcontractor as laid out within standards/specifications, inspection test plans and framework agreements throughout project life cycle for Newcastle upon Tyne site. Required to liaise, consult and inform Technical Authority, stakeholders and subcontractors when required.

Job Description

  • Review prospect (pre-award) specifications for weld inspection and NDT requirements at FEED/proposal stage and liaise with Proposals Engineers to open/close any required qualifications to align with TU standard, clarifications, or deviations.
  • Review contractual project (post award) specifications/documentation for weld inspection and NDT requirements at execution stage, liaising with PMA to open/close any required technical queries or deviations are opened/closed and ensure any modified weld inspection/NDT acceptance criteria are communicated to PQE for inclusion in ITP.
  • Liaise with Welding Engineer and Welding Supervisor for planning of welding trials and qualifications e.g., welding procedure qualification, welder performance qualifications and production test piece to avoid clash with P6 production related inspection/NDT.
  • Pre-weld inspection of welding trial or qualification samples in accordance with SI-06-455, SI06-456 and WPS requirements. (Joint set up, pure arrangement, recording of material dimensions, material heat/lot, shielding/backing gas batch numbers, recording consumable lot etc)
  • In process inspection of welding trial or qualification samples in accordance with SI-06-455, SI-06-456 and WPS requirements (100% weld monitoring, completion of form LTF-16-0033: As-Run Data and provision to Welding Engineer)
  • Post Weld VT of welding trial or qualification samples in accordance with SI-06-461, ITP and/or WPS requirements (100% VT including VT report generation and provision to Welding Engineer)
  • Post weld VT of umbilical offline/online tie in welds and termination welds in accordance with SI-06-461, ITP and/or WPS requirements (100% VT including VT report generation). Delegation of duty to NDT Subcontractor EN ISO 9712 VT level II when unavailable e.g. activity clash / night shift. HR-F-033 Rev 2 Uncontrolled if printed Date of last review: April 2024
  • Random in-process welding inspection to be performed on structural works performed by a TU appointed subcontractor e.g. reel packing/modifications or CAPEX projects to ensure conformance to MPS 04-11 and approved documentation
  • Post-weld VT of structural works performed by a TU appointed subcontractor e.g. reel packing/modifications or CAPEX projects to ensure conformance to MPS 04-11 and approved documentation. Delegation of duty to NDT Subcontractor EN ISO 9712 VT level II when unavailable e.g., activity clash / night shift.
  • Management, review and completion of NDT Subcontractor qualification matrix for personnel operating on TU site, ensuring compliance with SI-06-461 requirements
  • Generation and distribution of unique independently numbered and detailed NDT requests to NDT subcontractor in accordance with project requirements e.g., ITP requirement, SI-06-461.
  • Review of all NDT Subcontractor reports on behalf of TU to ensure completeness/correctness in accordance with ITP, SI-06-455 and SI-06-461.
  • Minimum 10% radiographic interpretation of NDT Subcontractor images in accordance with ITP, SI-06-455 and SI-06-461 on behalf of TU to verify performance and ensure correct acceptance.
  • Management and completion of TU Weld Tracker ensuring traceability of qualification, tie-in and termination welds is correct for feed into PowerBi weld performance statistics.
  • Perform internal audits in relation to welding inspection and NDT process.
  • Support external audit for welding inspection and NDT process e.g., Client audit or LRQA ISO 9001 audit.
  • Raise and/or contribute to Non-Conformance Report corrective action, preventative action and closure for welding/NDT related issues.
  • Problem solving and continuous improvement within welding inspection and NDT.

Required qualifications

  • CSWIP 3.1 Welding Inspector minimum (CSWIP 3.2 would be beneficial).
  • Minimum ISO 9712 Radiographic Interpreter. Experience with both conventional film and computed radiography images beneficial.
  • Minimum of two years industrial experience working within the welding inspection, NDT coordination or a similar role
  • Member of professional institution such as The Welding Institute (TWI) or be willing to work towards registration with institution and ECUK.

  • Comprehensive understanding of both welding inspection and non-destructive test methods relating to welding of umbilical and structural and ancillary components with ability to analyse and conclude associated data.
  • Comprehensive experience, knowledge and understanding of welding processes, procedures and qualifications inc. ability to verify compliance i.e., pre-weld, in-process and post weld inspection processes.
  • Confidence and ability to accept or reject welds to international, customer and internal engineering standards and specifications relating to welding, welding inspection and NDT of umbilical tube/line pipe, structures and ancillary components effectively
  • Comprehensive experience, knowledge and understanding of handling and welding of carbon steel, austenitic stainless steel, duplex/super duplex and Nickel based alloys.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding or quality system, reporting and traceability requirements.
  • Ability to apply and verify compliance to international, customer and internal engineering standards, specifications and drawings relating to welding, welding inspection and NDT of umbilical tube/line pipe, structures and ancillary components effectively.
  • Ability to communicate welding requirements and technical issues with customers, management and peers at all levels.
  • Ability to communicate instructions/requirements at the necessary level and coordinate subcontractor personnel effectively.
  • IT literacy (Microsoft Office applications, Adobe Acrobat)
