Job Purpose

We are currently looking for a Lead Structural Engineer to join the team at our Newcastle office.

 

The Lead Structural Engineer provides technical leadership, governance, and delivery oversight for structural engineering across Standard Catalogue and Engineer-to-Order (EtO) Umbilical Hardware Products. The role ensures compliance with internal design rules, global procedures, client specifications, and industry standards while coordinating with engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, and project teams.

 

The role acts as a key decision-making authority for structural design, ensuring outputs are technically robust, compliant, and delivered efficiently.

Job Description

  1. Standard Catalogue – Structural Engineering Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and maintenance of structural elements within the Standard Catalogue for Umbilical Hardware Products, including Subsea Termination Interfaces, Bullnose UTAs, Repair Joints, Pull-In Heads, and Friction Clamps.
  • Identify required catalogue updates arising from changes to industry standards or internal global procedures.
  • Maintain standard stress calculations and load calculation templates for catalogue products.
  • Ensure adherence to Global Procedures for PLM and NPD, acting as the accountable authority for structural compliance.
  • Develop and maintain supporting documentation, templates, and software tools.
  • Support updates to Functional Specifications, Tendering Datasheets, and related catalogue documentation.
  • Provide consultation to engineering, materials, and manufacturing teams on structural matters.
  • Support drawing production and review for catalogue hardware.

 

  1. Engineer‑to‑Order (EtO) Structural Engineering Responsibilities
  • Use relevant previous calculations and drawings to support new EtO design development.
  • Develop structural architecture, documentation, templates, and software tools for EtO hardware.
  • Ensure EtO designs adhere to internal design rules, MPS, and client requirements.
  • Produce and update structural components of Design Basis documents.
  • Maintain load calculation templates and stress calculations for EtO designs.
  • Support PPS documentation, drawings, and other technical deliverables for EtO hardware.
  • Provide structural engineering input during pre‑award and post‑award stages.
  • Support cost-base development for EtO designs.

 

  1. Governance and Compliance
  • Identify gaps to standards and raise awareness across engineering and project teams.
  • Define documented rules and methods that ensure structural engineering across the product range satisfies industry, client, and TechnipFMC standards.
  • Define containment actions for deviations from applicable standards.
  • Support Material Procurement Specifications to ensure alignment with structural design rules.
  • Participate in supplier deviation reviews and provide technical approval or rejection recommendations.
  • Support contract compliance reviews and justification activities.

 

  1. Cross‑Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with Lead Umbilical, Lead Materials, Engineering Managers, Draughtspersons, and Structural Engineers.
  • Provide technical guidance to manufacturing, suppliers, and project management.
  • Ensure clear communication and alignment across engineering disciplines.
  • Support the selection of standard hardware for project use.

You are meant for this role if:

  • Degree in Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Extensive experience in subsea hardware, umbilical systems, or similar engineered products.
  • Strong understanding of structural analysis, stress calculations, and design verification.
  • Proven experience leading engineering activities and coordinating multidisciplinary teams.
  • Familiarity with PLM, NPD processes, and industry standards.
  • Ability to interpret and apply client specifications and internal design rules.
  • Technical leadership and decision-making.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and cross‑functional collaboration.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Proficiency in engineering software tools relevant to structural analysis.
