Job Purpose

The Shift Control Engineer provides technical authority for Machine Controls System Safety, standardisation of Hardware, Software Controls philosophies and Process Control System functionality. The team define and govern the Controls and Automation strategy and standards for manufacturing improvements, continual process improvement, upgrades to existing equipment and for the introduction of new process equipment into the business. This role provides engineering support to production, process, and capex teams within the local business unit. The Shift Controls Engineer will respond to Process Equipment Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls System faults/breakdowns, apply effective fault-finding techniques, identify root cause, and implement timely repair/fault mitigation to minimise downtime and the impact to Manufacturing.

You will act as the first point of contact for Process Equipment Controls and Instrumentation breakdowns. The shift controls engineer will apply logical fault-finding methods to identify the root cause quickly and effectively and adopt a pragmatic approach to correct issues to minimize downtime and impact to the manufacturing schedule. To proactively identify improvements and robust long-term solutions to ongoing / reoccurring issues.

Job Description

  • Designated Shift expert for Control Systems and Instrumentation for all Process Equipment 
  • Primarily responsible for changing out faulty or damaged automation hardware such as drives, remote IO, PLCs, HMIs etc.
  • Produce detailed and concise technical shift reports outlining the initial problem, steps taken to investigate, and measures implemented to solve the issue along with recommendations on follow up actions
  • Carry out functional checks on Equipment prior to use. Highlight and address any electrical or control system issues to enable process to start first time
  • Preventative maintenance such as electrical terminal securement testing, panel cooling fan checks, general panels condition assessing for damage, corrosion and ingress, cabling termination and damage
  • Calibration of Equipment Instrumentation such as Dancer LVDT Positions, Load Cell Force 
  • Measurement & Temperature / Pressure Transducers
  • Identify and implement areas for Improvement to increase Process and Machine Efficiency and productivity based on business need, obsolescence, standardisation, functionality, and feed into dayshift team
  • Produce technical procedures for tasks which are not currently documented 
  • Provide conceptual control system ideas, formulate, and evaluate concepts, put forward subsequent implementation plans and co-ordinate the implementation and testing phase of process improvements to provide robust manufacturing solutions
  • Provide key input into the safety risk assessments of process equipment, identify risks, and offer technical expertise to provide engineered solutions to mitigate safety risks where required

  • Provide support to the capex team for the control system upgrade of process equipment during onsite installation and commissioning activities
  • Responsible for contacting sub-contractors in the case of a breakdown (supplier or service)
  • Utilisation of data collection and diagnostic tools to collate specific data to investigate anomalies and breakdowns during manufacturing to determine root cause and to facilitate continual improvement 
  • Assist in progress planning and reporting as required by TFMC Umbilicals. Communication of potential/actual constraints to progress; general concerns regarding QHS&E issues, engineering or other operational issues
  • Contribution and participation in the improvement, development and implementation of company quality and management procedures
  • Identify, participate, monitor and co-ordinate activities, equipment and materials associated with Health, Safety and Environmental considerations within the areas of the job holder’s responsibility

You are meant for this role if:

  • Minimum of an ONC/HNC in an electrical / controls / instrumentation discipline
  • The position calls for a broad theoretical and practical knowledge relating to varied aspects of Electrical and Control System Hardware Architecture & Automation Software including PLC, HMI and Drive design application software
  • Specific experience of Allen Bradley Control Systems such as Guardlogix Safety PLC, Powerflex AC Drives, PanelView HMI, SCADA, Ethernet Network Architectures (REP, Spanning Tree, DLR) and Remote Flex/Point IO would be advantageous
  • A working knowledge of Hydraulic / Fluid Power Systems and the utilisation of Machine Automation to control and provide integration with Hydraulic Systems is beneficial. 
  • Experience of Umbilical/Flowline process manufacturing and handling equipment would be very advantageous
  • Experience of computerised systems, including mathematical/spreadsheet software is necessary (Microsoft Office Word & Excel, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Teams)
  • A mix of Theoretical and Practical experience working with Control Systems is essential and the position will involve aspects of both computer-based development or small-scale changes as well as ‘hands-on’ investigation, root cause analysis and troubleshooting
  • Technical Umbilical Manufacturing product knowledge is preferred
