Principal Engineer - MV/HV Cable Design

Introduction
The post holder will play a key role in TechnipFMC renewables product development directly for the Dynamic Inter Array Cable System (DIAC) for Floating Offshore Wind and it is expected they will work closely with New Energies.
This role is placed in a dedicated Research & Development team with a strong technical focus - the development and maintenance of MV/HV submarine cable products and power cable elements in hybrid power umbilical products.
In general, the Research & Development function at TechnipFMC is responsible for the development of Umbilical and Power Cable products and their components providing focused niche technical guidance in Polymers, Metallurgy, Electrical Engineering, Cable/Umbilical Handling and Product Analysis; we contribute to the direction, co-ordination and implementation of the development of TechnipFMC products.
Job Purpose
We are seeking a Principal Engineer - MV/HV Cable Design to join our R&D team.
Acting as a technical authority and responsible for leading the design, development and maintenance of both MV/HV submarine cable products for offshore wind and power cable elements within hybrid power umbilical system, in-line with TechnipFMC's New Product Development and Product Life Maintenance procedures. Responsible for the technical deliverables for R&D projects and providing technical support and guidance across the R&D function and to other teams, where appropriate. Responsible for setting and maintaining design rules, technical standards and associated documentation requirements. Ultimately strengthening the company’s position in the marketplace, reduce costs, improving quality and increasing its product and capabilities portfolio.
Job Description
• At technical authority level, to provide technical leadership within the R&D team regarding MV/HV submarine cables. This may include but is not limited to;
▪ Leading, managing, delivering and documenting specific R&D projects.
▪ The development and maintenance of cable design rules.
▪ Setting standards for technical reports and documentation.
▪ Conducting appropriate cable design calculations studies.
▪ Liaising with internal & external clients and suppliers (as appropriate).
• To provide technical support and guidance the wider R&D team and others (as appropriate) throughout the life cycle of the product, including but not limited to;
▪ Technical risk identification and client specification reviews
▪ Non-conformances / Design rule and project concessions
▪ Complex client technical queries and their solutions
• Responsible for supporting, and where appropriate leading, the development and integration of new technologies, templates, calculations and tools to improve efficiency and quality.
• On job training and mentorship of engineers at all levels.
• Where appropriate and as directed, take actions to comply with the group/team expectations to meet their objectives.
You are meant for this job if:
Essential
• Degree or equivalent in an Engineering discipline – preferably Electrical or Mechanical Engineering; a Physics degree may also be suitable. Chartered Engineer Status or demonstrable ability to apply within a reasonable time frame.
• Extensive relevant experience of high voltage submarine cables in the offshore wind and/or oil & gas sectors, encompassing detailed cable system design, research & development and cable manufacturing processes.
• Strong relevant knowledge of submarine cable constructions, designs, ratings, limits, manufacturing, installation and operation; proficient with tools, methods and industry best practice regarding design and manufacture; familiarity with client documentation requirements and processes.
• Significant knowledge of relevant industry standards relating to submarine cable design, qualification, testing and the wider offshore wind/subsea industry; experience of interpretation and application of appropriate IEC standards and CIGRE recommendations.
• Demonstrable experience of problem solving and working in high pace environments.
• Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
• Proficient in Microsoft office tool such as word, excel and PowerPoint
Desirable
• A higher degree: MEng or higher in relevant subject.
• Publishing technical papers and or participation in industry forums and events such as CIGRE working groups or conferences.
• Experience delivering against challenging schedules in a project management environment; proficient in client interaction and acting as a technical authority.
• Knowledge of HV submarine cable testing (including factory, laboratory, type, R&D, offshore aspects) and offshore installation practices.
• Experience with engineering tools such as MathCAD or equivalent and or cable specific design and rating tools such as CYMCAP.
• Familiarity or experience in Finite Element Analysis tools such as COMSOL is not required but beneficial.
• Experience implementing R&D processes and practices with a drive for improvement.
