Job Purpose
The Elastomer Mixing and Molding Technician will be responsible for preparing, mixing, and molding elastomeric compounds in a laboratory setting. This role supports R&D and prototyping efforts by ensuring consistent material quality, accurate formulation, and precise execution of mixing and molding processes. The technician will work closely with engineers and scientists to develop new materials and support ongoing testing and validation activities.
Job Description
- Prepare elastomer formulations according to specified recipes and lab protocols.
- Operate mixing equipment (e.g., internal mixers, two-roll mills) and molding machines (e.g., compression, transfer, or injection molding presses).
- Operate sandblasting equipment and prep the anti-extrusion devices.
- Monitor and record process parameters including temperature, pressure, mixing time, and curing cycles.
- Perform visual and dimensional inspections of molded parts to ensure quality and consistency.
- Maintain cleanliness and organize areas in accordance with 5S and Lean standards.
- Identify and implement opportunities for waste reduction, process optimization, and standard work as part of Lean initiatives.
- Participate in SSI activities, including hazard identification, risk mitigation, and safety audits.
- Assist in the development and scaling of new elastomer compounds.
- Document all activities, observations, and results in lab notebooks or digital systems.
- Follow safety protocols and handle chemicals and equipment responsibly.
You are meant for this job if:
- High school diploma or technical certification; associate degree in materials science, chemistry, or related field preferred.
- 2+ years of experience in elastomer mixing and/or molding, preferably in a lab or R&D environment.
- Familiarity with rubber compounding, curing systems, and molding techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents, SDSs, and formulation sheets.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Basic computer skills for data entry and documentation.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with NBR, HNBR, EPDM, or other elastomeric materials.
- Knowledge of lab safety and chemical handling procedures.
- Exposure to analytical techniques such as rheometry, & tensile testing.
