Job Purpose
Hiring Engineering Technician for the Davis, CA location! The Schilling Robotics business unit develops complex electro-mechanical robotics and teleoperated vehicles for use in the deep ocean. The Engineering Technician’s key responsibility is to support the software, electronic and mechanical engineers in building and testing electro-mechanical prototype hardware and software. The Engineering Technician’s most important contributions are to increase the speed, effectiveness, and efficiency of hands on prototype testing, and to reduce the time engineers must allocate to these activities.
Job Description
- Works cooperatively and collaboratively with Engineering and Operations to develop test setups and perform prototype testing.
- Executes software tests under the direction of software engineers.
- Assemble electrical and electronic systems and prototypes according to engineering data, using knowledge of electrical principles, using hand tools and measuring instruments.
- Assemble mechanical/hydraulic prototypes according to engineering data and knowledge of mechanical/hydraulic principles, using hand tools and measuring instruments.
- Set up and operate test equipment to evaluate performance of developmental parts, assemblies, or systems under simulated operating conditions, and record results.
- Executes and documents tests and procedures to characterize and qualify electronic and mechanical/hydraulic assemblies.
- Assists manufacturing and production department by transferring development knowledge to production.
- Provide feedback to design engineers on design improvements.
- Assists engineers with sourcing parts.
- Perform modification of prototypes from schematics and engineers’ instructions.
- Prepares documentation for the creation and release of parts, e.g., part specifications and PCO submittal.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics and assembly drawings
- Proficiency with software; able to learn various PC-based test programs quickly with minimal assistance.
- Ability to set up mechanical/hydraulic and electronic hardware for performing qualification tests.

- AA/AS in technical systems such as: electronics, industrial systems, manufacturing, or other equivalent experience
- 5 years hands on experience assembling, troubleshooting and repairing electrical and mechanical/hydraulic assemblies
Additional Desired Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.
- Ability to gather, organize & clearly present test data.
- Ability to use common hand tools and knowledge of general manufacturing standards.
- Soldering skills on SMD and through hole technologies.
- Skilled in the basic test and measurement equipment such as DMM, Oscilloscope, Signal Generator, and cable tester.
- Working knowledge of PCB layout process.
- Familiarity with common interfaces such as RS-232/485 and Ethernet.
- Experience with welding (MIG/TIG…) and machining (manual, CNC), or 3D printing.
- Experience with hydrostatic pressure testing, fiber optics and high-power circuits (up to 6000V).
- Has ability to travel to customer sites (including offshore) to support integration and test activities.
- Working knowledge of Ohm’s Law and Algebra.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Offshore, ROV system & subsystem knowledge, highly desirable
Work Environment
- Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, listen and speak for long periods of time.
- Manual dexterity using hands, fingers, and arms to push, pull, reach, grab, hold, and lift.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Frequent use of PC.
- Regular, repetitive arm/hand motion (typing, mouse control, etc.)
- Ability to wear steel toe shoes, safety glasses and other personal protective equipment as needed.
- Close viewing of computer monitor
- Ability to work outside, in warm and cold temperatures to perform various tests in our Engineering Park.
- May be asked to travel and work offshore in harsh and inclement weather conditions.
- Must be able to pass designated offshore medical physical exam or possess current medical, if required.
- Must be able to pass designated offshore survival examinations or possess current offshore survival certification, if required.
Salary and Benefits
Salary: $31.43/hour - $36.97
