Job Purpose

The Trainee Pipelay Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of vessel pipelay equipment and for carrying out additional maintenance or administrative duties as directed by the Pipelay Systems Supervisor (PSS) or Chief Pipelay Engineer (CPE).

Job Description

  • Operation of the pipelay system and equipment as directed by the OCS or PSS for all project and maintenance related activities.
  • Attend and contribute to all related project and internal safety briefings, Task Risk Assessment (TRA) and Tool-Box Talks TBT).
  • Read and fully understand all pipelay operating procedures and provide feedback where improvements could be made. Periodic procedure reviews incorporating and understanding any relevant MAFS to equipment.
  • Input and monitor all pipelay equipment parameters supplied by the project team and approved by CPE, OCM, & Senior Project Engineer.
  • Understand and comply with all Company procedures, policies and instructions contained within the VSO Fleet Management System.
  • Develop a good understand project task plans and procedures.
  • Taking time to learn about the pipelay system becoming fully conversant with the layout, operational modes and alarm handling.
  • Develop a good understanding all pipelay system capacities and limits.
  • Maintain a clear and accurate log of all activities and times undertaken during Project execution.
  • Report immediately all system faults to the PSS or CPE and notify the OCS or OCM maintaining a clear and accurate log of all times, faults and solutions.
  • Maintain accuracy of Logs, Shift Changeover Reports and other Reports while ensuring correct filing of all paperwork and report logs.
  • Using Operator and Control screens, ensure all pipelay equipment is available in advance of requirement and confirmed to be running and checked out by relevant personnel
  • Work in a 12-hour shift pattern with other Pipelay Operators such that only one Operator is relieved at a time. During this relief, a comprehensive handover is completed between oncoming and off going personnel, prior to receipt of shift responsibility by oncoming Operator
  • Assist with pipelay maintenance tasks as directed by the PSS, work scope being dependent on individual base skills, experience and training 
  • Where training has been given, conduct steel wire rope inspections, greasing programmes and follow up of maintenance records
  • Diligently carry out, in a safe and efficient manner, any tasks to which he has been directed by the OCS relating to project operations or PSS for maintenance tasks.
  • Participate in training and competence programmes in order to improve technical knowledge

You are meant for this job if:

Essential:

  • A good working knowledge of the mechanical system of heavy industrial equipment, e.g.: cranes, pipelay systems, construction equipment.
  • Awareness of how systems operate and the consequences of operator performance and behaviour for project execution, and safety of self and others
  • Organisational skills and ability to apply these to maintain accurate records and logs
  • Ability to use computer-based systems to interpret data and draw appropriate conclusions, taking (or recommending) appropriate action
  • Good use of spoken and written English language (minimum standard IMO Model Course 3.17 in Maritime English, Parts 1 and 2)
  • Maturity and willingness to live away from home in a confined environment for lengthy periods
  • Showing initiative and ‘self-starting’
  • Constructive and responsive to supervisor’s / manager’s requests
  • Learning and developing skills and knowledge
  • Listening to others and prepared to receive feedback

Nice to have: 

  • Previous offshore industry experience
  • Working knowledge of control systems of heavy industrial equipment / machinery e.g.: Operation of SCADA or similar systems such as IVMS
  • Pipelay experience 

Qualifications

Preferred:

  • Technical trade qualification in mechanical or electrical engineering.
  • SVQ 3 / HNC / HND.
