Second Engineer (Offshore Fleet)

Job Purpose
The Second Engineer shall undertake duties as allocated or directed by the Vessel Chief Engineer and may be employed in either watchkeeping or day work duties as required and has the following responsibilities.
Job Description
Includes but not limited to:
- Shall be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all machinery and equipment for which the Engineering department has responsibility
- Responsible for the supervision of the Engineering department staff and for the allocation of responsibility with regard to maintenance and operating duties
- Must be familiar with the machinery and systems, so that, in an emergency situation, essential services can be safely and speedily restored. In addition must have a full understanding of, and abide by, Company procedures, policies and instructions.
- Ensure that the staff under his control are adequately trained
- Shall be aware of Class requirements and will be responsible for the preparation of machinery for survey, as directed by the Vessel Chief Engineer
- Responsible for ensuring that the information, presented in the Engine Record (ER) log, maintenance records, water condition logs and other information, as required, is accurate and up to date.
- Responsible for advising the Vessel Chief Engineer of spare gear requirements
- Shall ensure that maintenance and repair work, done in the Engineering department is adequately supervised and carried out in a safe manner, without contravention of applicable rules and regulations
- Assist the Vessel Chief Engineer with the preparation of the running repair list, supervision of major repairs and dockings. Shall meet and discuss daily with the Vessel Chief Engineer and those under his control, planned work schedules, progress and defects/problems encountered
- Assist the Vessel Chief Engineer with the planned maintenance system
- There are normally two Second Engineers onboard the vessel, each working a 12 hour shift, however, during periods of down manning, as in lay-up, when there may be only one Second Engineer onboard then he will assume the undernoted duties in total
- Review the Safety Notices, VSO Circulars files and the Business Management System (BMS) Amendment file in the current version of the CD-Rom, upon joining and re-joining the vessel
Shall be appointed Deputy Safety Officer and assist the Safety Officer in the execution of duties including but not restricted to:
- Safety related inspections of machinery spaces
- Control of Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) relating to engineering consumables
- Accident/incident investigation
- Monitoring processes which have the capability to cause an environmental impact
Qualifications and Experience
Essential qualifications (professional, technical, academic):
- Unlimited Second Engineer Officer - Standard of Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Reg (III/2) Certificate of Competency for HV vessels
Typical background and experience required:
- Comply with requirements set out in IMCA M 117 – Training and experience of Key DP Personnel
- Comply with the requirements of IMCA Guidelines for Design and Operation of Dynamically Positioned Vessels
